Tokyo-based architect, Shin Ohori, and his firm General Design Co, have recently completed a beautiful private weekend residence in the mountains at Kawakami-mura, Minamisaku-gun, Nagano.

Life takes place mostly outdoors at the Mountain Research. The various functions — kitchen, storage, bath, wood shelter — are located in nearly separate, simple structures, all resting on a multi-level platform. The material of the structures is local pine, and the owner hopes that the buildings will eventually biodegrade into the mountain soil and return to nature’s endless cycle of re-creation.

Just like modular synthesizers, people connect with each other...

Just like modular synthesizers, people connect with each other in order to achieve diverse objectives.
“How it would be, if a house was dreaming”

The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture - the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers “Galerie der Gegenwart”. Resultant permeabilty of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves - describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself.

Noran Bakrie.

Discussed are the types of poetic expressions in film, poetry as a visual medium, “cinepoems”, and the influence of Vigo, Dali, Bunuel, Cocteau, and Eisenstein. A discussion surrounds the need to collaborate between writers and filmmakers, the divide between types of cinema, and collaboration as key for the future of film.

* Please note condition of reel- phantom audio can be heard on pt 1 due to tape condition.

(PT 1: 1:21:48; PT 2: 1:15:07; TRT: 2:36:55)

Rape (1969)

In November 1968 work began on one of one of John & Yoko’s most ambitious film ventures, a 75-minute mini-feature called Rape. It starred Eva Majlata, a 21 year old Hungarian actress who couldn’t speak English. She cannot escape the prying attentions of the camera which follows her around the streets of London, through a park, allowing her no privacy and almost causing her to walk into the path of a truck. She attempts to escape in a taxi, but is still followed. She is eventually cornered in an apartment from which she apparently cannot escape and her tearful pleas to the camera remain ignored. Rape was shot when John and Yoko were both at Great Charlotte Street Hospital following Yoko’s miscarriage. The cameraman was Nick Knowland, who worked on most of John and Yoko’s productions.

The film received its world premiere on Austrian Television on 31st March 1969. That year it was also shown at the Montreux Television Festival and the Mannheim Film Festival. A day after the Austrian TV broadcast John and Yoko held a press conference in Vienna. John commented: “We are showing how all of us are exposed and under pressure in our contemporary world. This isn’t just about the Beatles. What is happening to this girl on the screen is happening in Biafra, Vietnam, everywhere.” The theme of the relentless, clinical camera lens, ‘raping’ the privacy of individuals or groups for the entertainment of the viewing public intrigued critic Willie Frischauer, who wrote in the Evening Standard; “This film does for the age of television what Franz Kafka’s The Trial did for the age of totalitarianism.”

Here you have the OFFF 2009 Main Titles from Prologue (by Kyle...

Here you have the OFFF 2009 Main Titles from Prologue (by Kyle Cooper, Ilya Abulhanov and Elizabeth Newman). This is the first project by Graça Correia and her new Italian partner, Roberto Ragazzi. It is a bold statement that hides nothing.
This is also a house that is easy to love from certain perspectives and from others; it looks quite unsuitable for its surroundings. From some angles, the house seems like an accident, some kind of a mishap with transportation containers and building materials. One part of the building is buried inside the hill while another sticks out over the river. It appears about to teeter off the hill at any moment, just waiting to land in its final resting place in the river.

Maya Lin's linearity

I believe Maya Lin is the perfect example of Asian Kartini. Born in y. 1959, Lin, as an Asian and woman, has become one of the most brilliant artists slash architects in the US. She designed the famous Vietnam Veterans Memorial on her 20th age. She was still pursuing her Bachelor in Arts degree in Yale University by that time. She got her Master of Architecture degree in the same university, not to mention other numerous honorary doctorate degrees.

Science plays a major role in the work she is doing now. She is very intellectual in her approach and conducts a massive amount of research for each project. For example, her first of two pieces for the Academy of Science, entitled Where the Land Meets the Sea, was based on data from a US Geological Study mapping the topology of the San Francisco Bay. As with her Systematic Landscapes, she takes great care to humanize this data and give it new depth and life. The piece looks like a drawing, floating in space above the terrace, and she describes this melding of art and science as a “way to visualize our world in an effort to more fully understand it.”

Maya has a tremendous passion and curiosity for the world around her. She surrounds herself with mountains of research and works tirelessly to translate cold hard facts into more accessible and relatable pieces of art. Some of this stems from what she calls a “child like curiosity” to just see what it will look like, but there is also a very political aspect to her work. She wants to make people aware of the environment they take for granted, and she said a few times, “If we can’t see it, we pollute it.” Through constant collaboration with scientists, Maya is a committed environmentalist, trying to help us see what we’re missing.

The work pictured above are very experiential, as something she laments is lost in the stillness of a photograph.
